Qualifying for OAA Insurance Benefits
For over 30 years, Mumby Insurance Brokers has provided well priced, comprehensive insurance protection to OAA members. Some of the key factors that have made the programme so popular amongst members are
- first class service by Mumby Insurance
- prompt and helpful claims service by the underwriting carriers
- the broad array of benefits available
- preferred rates and coverages
- the availability of the programmes to full time staff of members, creating an additional benefit of employment
While groups are created because, on average, members display a "better than average" trend in claims, it should be noted that not all group members will possess these desired traits. For these members, Mumby Insurance does everything in its power to obtain coverage outside of the group carriers, but like all brokers, we are limited in the markets to which we have access. Therefore we cannot guarantee that we can find a market for every possible risk.
Because insurance is loss sharing concept, what comes out, must first be put in. In order to ensure that individual contributions to the insurance pool are as low as possible, steps need to be taken to ensure that only a few losses occur that will withdraw from the pool, thus keeping pricing stable and ensuring the continuation of the plan. In order to keep everyone’s prices low, risks that are deemed to be of an increased hazard of loss, cannot be permitted into the group while the given hazard exists. Examples of this include drivers with multiple driving traffic violations and/or accidents, homes that are vacant, or contain knob and tube wiring or oil tanks, people with prior health problems, etc.
It is also important to note that group insurance plans must also restrict access to those who are directly related to the group association. This means friends, extended family and children* are not permitted to take part in the plans unless they too have earned the professional designation or are the full time employees of someone who has. This is due to the fact that groups are created based on the traits of the targeted members and the profession, not their friends and family.
If affinity programmes were open to all applicants, they would very quickly cease to exist. Claim costs would rapidly deteriorate the premium reserves, which would give way to rate increases. These rate increases would eventually offset and defeat the purpose of the group discount.
** Financially dependent children under the age of 25 who are living at home or attending school full time are eligible for discounts under the home and auto programs assuming they meet all other underwriting guidelines. |
